Description
Aux Verres Stérilisés is an old fashioned tavern dating from 1945 located on Rachel corner St. Hubert in Montreal. The neon signs on the side of the building and above the door are from another era when taverns were for men only and women were not allowed. It was their refuge from the women folk and there they could drink their beer and snack on boiled eggs and pickles. The windows are frosted over so the patrons would not be seen by passers-by. The sign above the door says, Sterilized Glasses because it was the first establishment of its kind to buy a dishwasher.
In 1986, the Quebec government finally passed a law making it illegal to ban women from entering a tavern. I can remember in the 1970`s that women were allowed into a tavern provided that the tavern served meals, so my friends and I would sometimes go to the local tavern for lunch out of curiosity. The meals were far from great but slowly but surely the owners knew they had to add better food to their menu.
There aren`t many of these places left in Montreal and so I tried to capture what it might have looked like back in the day and of course there are always a few kids playing hockey outside on the sidewalk.
