Description
What is it about these streets, Debullion and Napoleon ? Why do I keep returning there? Perhaps because the memories these old store fronts bring, the stories they tell are vitally alive with names and faces I remember so well, names and faces that I don't wish forgotten. Though those corner bakeshops and variety stores are now closed, dormant, just relics of the past, their memories are still alive in our minds.
Peloponissos Bakery was a popular neighborhood bakery serving fresh pizza everyday, wonderful baked breads and pastries and exuding warmth and aromas that only owners who loved their craft could accomplish. My mother and her family lived along those streets in the 1920's , 30's and 40's when she was young and the city was marvelous place.
Various cultures would proudly display their products, advertise their wares in whatever languages they knew would be understood by buyers and consumers who frequented their shops. Freedom, free trade, meant just that, everyone was treated with great respect and friendliness. Special foods were lovingly prepared, shared secret recipes were developed into special sauces, sandwiches and deli meats and many restaurants that started 70-80 years ago can still be found along that St. Lawrence Blvd, Park Avenue strip as well as up and down adjacent streets. Old street signs are painted over now, torn down, native languages are no longer allowed to be seen,no more Yiddish,Hungarian, Italian, Greek, Chinese etc culture in our great city.
