Description
The year was 1985. The street was Queen Mary Road in Snowdon, a trendy and popular borough of Montreal. We had found a great little upstairs shop to rent with only eleven steps up with four large rooms sunny rooms in which to showcase the works of 50 Quebec artists and so was born Galerie-Atelier Toile Etoile. Long work tables doubled as framing counters by day and a classroom for painting lessons. We advertised lessons in Watercolor, Drawing, Oil and Acrylic painting in the local newspaper.
We filled our walls with very interesting paintings created by the best artists we could find through visiting trade shows, vernissages, word of mouth and the Art periodicals of the time. I can remember working seven days a week, long hours spent interviewing artists. framing, hanging work and serving customers. Selling art was never easy but we did have our " regulars" who drop in from time to time. Sunday wine and cheese vernissages advertised in the Art section of the local newspapers brought us new clients eager to see which artists we were featuring.
From 1985 to 2000 we were located on Queen Mary Road across the street from this row of trendy clothing shops I have depicted in my painting. Le Chef Restaurant served hearty basic food, Multimags was the go-to place for every periodical you might wish for. Elizabeth Hager was a posh place for ladies' blouses, skirts and dresses, a kind a non-browsing type store. These vintage places are now closed but I have lovingly recreated my view and my memories of the 15 years spent at my Art shop on Queen Mary Road.
