Description
Back in the 70's a few of my teacher friends and I were starving after attending a series of pedagogical meetings at our High School. It was early, just after 2:30 p.m. and we were all free to leave. Too early to just go home.. what to do? Where to go? There wasn't a decent deli near our school, but the science teacher wanted crepes or pancakes with applesauce. The history teacher had her heart set on smoked meat, fries, deli pickle and cherry cake. The religion teacher wanted hamburger steak and baked potato and yours truly the art teacher wanted to browse Sam the Record Man store and ordering a huge slice of strawberry cheesecake and a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
Because it was fairly early when we arrived downtown to Ben's, around 5:00 p.m. The place was empty. We chose a great big window booth. The waiters were milling about, setting tables, refilling ketchup bottles, pouring ice water, shining up glasses and chatting with the deli meat brisket cutter as he carved juicy tender smoked meat for the dinner crowd. I asked my waiter to bring me a medium smoked meat on rye and an order of fries in a take-out container to bring home to my folks. This was Ben's restaurant, delicious, delightful and unforgettable.
